A Flexible Rule of Life
~2 min read
A rule of life is a prayerfully chosen pattern that helps order practices around love for God and neighbor. It is not a monastic law, a salvation test, or a universal schedule.
Step 1: Name the present season
Write your principal responsibilities, health limitations, relationships, church commitments, and known risks. A realistic rule begins with the life you actually have.
Step 2: Choose minimum sustainable rhythms
Area Minimum rhythm Possible fuller expression
Scripture One coherent passage most days Whole-book reading, memorization, study, journaling Prayer Honest daily prayer, even brief Structured morning/evening prayer, intercession list Worship Weekly gathered church Preparation, Lord’s Supper, service, post-sermon reflection Fellowship One honest Christian relationship Small group, mentoring, hospitality, accountability Rest Regular sleep and a weekly period of rest Lord’s Day rhythms, retreat, vacation, outdoor activity Service One stable responsibility Additional mercy, teaching, practical or ministry service Generosity Planned giving Hospitality, mission support, emergency fund for others Witness Prayer for named unbelievers Gospel conversations, Bible reading, mission involvement Digital boundaries Device-free prayer and sleep protection Weekly digital rest, filters, scheduled communication Review Monthly reflection Quarterly retreat and annual revision
Step 3: Add limits
State what you will not do in order to protect love: no device in bed, no private messaging that compromises fidelity, no schedule that eliminates worship, no hidden access to a repeated temptation, or no ministry commitment accepted without review.
Step 4: Review without scoring salvation
Ask monthly:
-
Which practice helped me attend to God and people?
-
Which became performative, unrealistic, or neglected?
-
What season has changed?
-
Where is repentance or support needed?
-
What one adjustment will I make?
