Prayers for Growing in Love

~3 min read

These prayers are original compositions shaped by Scripture. Adapt them rather than treating them as formulas.

For greater love

Father, you are worthy of my whole heart, yet my desires are divided. Show me your glory in Christ, pour your love into my heart by the Spirit, and teach me to trust, delight, worship, and obey. Make my love truthful in how I treat people. Amen.

For spiritual dryness

God of my salvation, I feel little and understand less. Keep me turned toward you in the dark. Where there is sin, lead me to repentance; where there is weakness, sustain me; where there is grief, receive my lament. Let Christ’s finished work be firmer than my changing sense of nearness. Amen.

For repentance

Holy Father, I have called evil good and trusted a rival promise. I confess my specific sin without excuse. Thank you for the Advocate, Jesus Christ. Cleanse me, help me repair harm, remove provision for temptation, and produce the fruit of repentance. Amen.

For gratitude

Giver of every good gift, rescue me from entitlement and forgetfulness. Teach me to receive creation with thanks without making gifts ultimate. Above all, thank you for the Son, adoption, the Spirit, the church, and the hope of resurrection. Amen.

For suffering

Compassionate God, this pain is not small to me. I ask for relief, wisdom, and help. Keep me from false explanations and despair. Hold me near the crucified Christ, provide human care, and anchor hope in the resurrection and new creation. Amen.

For doubt

God of truth, you are not threatened by my questions. Purify my motives, give intellectual honesty, lead me to reliable evidence and wise people, and keep me willing to obey what is clear. Help my unbelief and reveal Christ more fully. Amen.

For obedience

Lord Jesus, I know the next faithful step but my will resists. I cannot produce love by force. Work in me both willing and doing. Let your prior love, wise authority, and Spirit’s presence carry me into concrete obedience. Amen.

For mission

Lord of all peoples, make your name known and honored. Give the church compassion for the lost, clarity in the gospel, courage without aggression, and humility across cultures. Show me how to pray, give, send, welcome, speak, and go. Amen.

For holiness

Holy Spirit, expose the world, flesh, and devil without making me fearful. Unite me to Christ’s victory in daily practice. Train my attention, strengthen escape, deepen accountability, and make purity a form of love rather than self-display. Amen.

For assurance

Father, when I look inward I find mixed motives and incomplete love. Turn my eyes to Christ’s sufficient righteousness and sacrifice. Bear witness to my adoption and let the fruit of grace grow. Keep me from presumption and from condemning fear. Amen.

For worship

Triune God, gather my scattered attention. Let truth awaken reverence and joy. Receive my body, mind, song, silence, giving, and obedience. Make the church’s worship a faithful rehearsal of the day every nation praises the Lamb. Amen.

For perseverance

Faithful God, keep me through changing seasons. When zeal fades, deepen roots; when suffering comes, sustain hope; when I fall, bring me back through repentance; when I grow old, make me fruitful in prayer and testimony. Finish what you began. Amen.
