Evangelism, Mission, and Love for God

Why does love for God move outward toward people and nations who do not yet worship Christ?

Chapter thesis

Christians evangelize because Christ is Lord, the gospel is true, people need reconciliation, love seeks their eternal good, and God is gathering worshipers from every people.

God’s glory among the nations

The promise to Abraham looks toward blessing for all families of the earth. The Psalms call the nations to praise. Jesus commissions disciples of all nations. Revelation portrays a redeemed multitude from every tribe, people, and language before God and the Lamb.

Mission therefore begins in God’s purpose, not missionary adventure. God deserves the worship of every people. Love for God longs for his name to be honored beyond one’s own family, culture, and nation.

The necessity of the message

Evangelism is the communication of the news that the holy Creator reconciles sinners through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and calls all people to repent and believe. A godly life supports the message but cannot explain it by itself. People must hear who Christ is and what he has done.

Romans 10 joins sending, preaching, hearing, believing, calling, and salvation. God’s sovereignty does not make proclamation unnecessary; he uses proclaimed truth as an appointed means.

Love and urgency

Second Corinthians says the love of Christ controls his ambassadors. Because judgment and reconciliation are real, silence cannot always be defended as respect.

Yet love rejects coercion, manipulation, deceptive promises, and treating people as projects.

Faithful witness listens, asks questions, explains clearly, admits uncertainty, serves practically, and calls for a real response. Gentleness is not vagueness. Courage is not aggression.

Every Christian participates

Not every believer is called to vocational cross-cultural mission, but every Christian belongs to a missionary church. Participation includes local witness, prayer, giving, sending, hospitality, translation, professional service, discipleship, and going.

Those considering cross-cultural service should seek character, theological preparation, local-church confirmation, cultural humility, resilience, and partnership with healthy churches. Romantic zeal without accountability can harm both missionary and community.

Studd’s missionary zeal challenges comfort-centered Christianity and reminds the church that Christ is worthy of costly obedience. His rhetoric should not be turned into a universal command for reckless decisions or contempt for ordinary callings. Biblical mission is sacrificial, but it is also church-sent, wise, accountable, and enduring.

Against cultural imperialism

Christian mission has sometimes been entangled with empire, racism, paternalism, or national ambition. These sins should be named rather than defended. The gospel does not require people to become culturally Western. Scripture judges every culture, including the missionary’s.

The aim is disciples who obey Christ in locally rooted churches, not permanent dependence on foreign leaders. Cultural humility listens, learns language, distinguishes gospel from preference, and honors indigenous leadership.

Important distinction

Good works and evangelism belong together but are not identical. Compassion displays Christ’s love; verbal witness explains the gospel. Neither should be used to excuse neglect of the other.

Chapter summary

Love for God seeks his glory among the nations, and love for neighbor communicates reconciliation in Christ. Every Christian participates, while some are specifically sent across cultures. Mission must be truthful, gentle, church-centered, sacrificial, and humble.

Practice for this week

Pray daily for one unbeliever and one unreached people. Initiate one natural gospel conversation or invite someone to read a Gospel with you.

Lord of the harvest, make your name holy among the nations. Give me compassion, clarity, courage, and humility. Guard your church from coercion and pride. Send workers, establish faithful churches, and let my love for you overflow in witness. Amen.
